Mr. Varner Student _____________________________________ Geologic Time Presentation Purpose: To research and gather information on a particular period or epoch of geologic time, and to present all essential information about climate, geography, biology, and important events. Reports must be done in an original and creative way. Cutting and pasting from web sites will receive no credit. Resources: ¥ A web page for each period and epoch has been set up to let you begin finding information about the geography, climate, life and events of your time period. There are the following books on the reference shelf: Science encyclopedias (there are several, Ref 500 ...), Fossils (Ref 550 EAR v3), Plate Tectonics (Ref 550 EAR v5), Macmillan Encyclopedia of Earth Sciences (Ref 550 MAC), Atlas of the Evolving Earth (Ref 551.7 ATL), Atlas of Life on Earth (Ref 551.7 DIX), Fossils of the World (Ref 560 TUR), Extinct Species of the World (Ref 575.7 BAL). ¥ The Escondido Public Library will also have reference and check out books you may want to view. The activity: Each student will be given a geologic period or epoch to report on. The following information must be presented: ¥ name of period or epoch, ¥ range of time for the period or epoch, ¥ geography of North America for the period (outline maps available), at least one map for the period should be included, description to be included ¥ geography of the world for the period (map optional, general description required), ¥ supercontinents, continents, and oceans labeled on any maps, ¥ description of the climate for the world and especially for North America/Laurentia, ¥ general description of life for the period, ¥ specific examples of animals and plants from the period, especially index fossils or special creatures, ¥ some explanation of the events that took place during the period, especially changes in climate, major or minor biological extinction events, movement of continents and changes in earth's oceans. Grading scale: Points will be issued on the following scale. If there is something you want to do that is not listed, contact the teacher for consideration and agreement on points. Remember, the following are maximum points for each type of report, not guaranteed points. ¥ Large poster: 20 points (minimum requirement = two class assignments) +10 points with 5-10 minute class presentation ¥ Diorama or 3-D model along with a map & description poster of the diorama or model: 30 points +10 points with 5-10 minute class presentation Typed report with large poster used for illustration: 40 points +10 points with 5-10 minute class presentation Typed report with diorama or model used for part of the illustrations: 50 points +10 points with 5-10 minute class presentation Online web page report which includes illustrations, maps, etc. Scanning service is available from me for illustrations or maps if needed. Server space is available. Movies and other media may be included as well. 55 points +10 points with 5-10 minute presentation of the web page on screen ¥ Powerpoint or Keynote presentation to the class with all required information, maps, images, movies, etc. There must be a recorded or live voice presentation with the Powerpoint or Keynote. Scanning service is available. 65 points ¥ Student produced film or narrated slide presentation (iMovie, etc.) presented to class. All required information must appear in the film. 80 points Students may also bring in additional items during presentations such as fossils or rocks specific to their time period. *** Please let the teacher know in advance if you plan to do a presentation of any kind.
