Have you seen the documentary on PBS called Paving the Way: The National Park to Park Highway? Check out Brandon Wade's film page. You can also watch the trailer.

nanabeth,

If you look at the maps and books section of this site, you'll see a guide book called The Playground Trail by Lee and Jane Whitely. It does not have a lot of modern maps to find the old road, but does have several of the old auto trail maps of the highway. Part of the NPtoP was the Yellowstone Highway (not Trail), and there is a book by Lee Whitely on that as well. It's described on the same maps and books page. One of the things I'd like to do is make a road guide, and to make a road trip (or several) along the NPtoPH.

There is one section fairly well mapped and described, and that's the National Old Trails Road section from Los Angeles, CA to Holbrook, AZ. Most of that became Route 66. In the guidebooks, you want to look for the National Old Trails Road or 1926 Route 66 alignments. For the long Arizona section, I would recommend Route 66 Across Arizona : A Comprehensive Two-Way Guide for Touring Route 66, but it seems that Amazon is no longer carrying it. For the whole section of 66 along the Highway, your best bet is Jerry McClanahan's EZ66 Guide for Travellers. You can find links and info on Route 66 books and maps on my Recommended Route 66 Resources.

I will have a page on the Highway on this site, but as always, I'm doing all this a little at a time.

Forums like this are continually bomberded by spam bot software. The reason you don't see the stuff is due to measures I've set up. However, they do keep trying to get in!

If you are in Russia, on gmail, or meltmail but are a real person who wants in the forum, just go into my web site by the American Roads link at the top of the page, and look up my Contact information. Email me, tell me your interests in this forum and in the site, and I'll let you into the forum.

Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway / Re: Route
September 23, 2008, 11:37:34 PM
The headquarters of the Pikes Peak Ocean to Ocean Highway was in Colorado Springs. In 1925, the route of the highway was a winding one that largely still exists today in Colorado. From Colorado's eastern border, the PPOO follows US Highway 24 west through Colorado Springs, then north of Pikes Peak, and meets up with US Highway 6. The road then follows US 6 west to Grand Junction, where it meets with US 50 and is cosigned US 6 / US 50 to the border with Utah.

Recently I added a Dixie Overland Highway introduction page, and now there is a new Lee Highway page on the site. If anyone how there can contribute more information or make corrections, I'd appreciate it.

Highway 66 / Re: Oklahoma resources from ODOT

I forgot this page. it's really cool:

A Chronology of the Construction History of Route 66 in Oklahoma
http://www.okladot.state.ok.us/memorial/route66/consthistory/index.htm

I was shocked to see this web site on a Dell laptop at work and notice how all the colors were really hideous. I tried changing the color profile on the machine, but no dice.
The main offender was the background peach color. It really is a fairly subtle buff peach, but on the Dells it was shocking pink. Yuk!
Even the red was sort of a glowing ugly red instead of the nice all-American flag red that it's supposed to be.

If you're seeing some really awful colors, I apologize, and advise playing with the contrast and color profile to get a better view of the Internet.
